The Role of Cultural and Conservation Practices in the Use of Sandalwood

I didn't really know that there were so many uses of sandalwood and how culturally important it was in other places. In late 2018, early 2019, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature declared sandalwood to be a vulnerable species. After that, the Indian government started cracking down on its export. I found all of these newspaper report incidents of Sudanese people being stopped at customs departments and airports trying to leave with small amounts of Sandalwood. That's a really direct example of laws changing and then people's relationship to this important product, this important wood has to change too.
