The Carolina parakeet went extinct in the early 20th century because people hunted it for its feathers, which were popular in hats. Baldwin thinks there's an ecological niche left for the monk parakeet because of the killed off Carolina one. Monk parakeets have become the second most widespread parrot in the world.
