The Shape File Is Going to Die
The shape file is ingrained so deeply in historic data that there's going to be a fairly long time period for those data to get migrated forward. I also would argue that a really effective replacement to the shape file doesn't fully exist. The proponents of flat geo buff have found really good ways to use it as a drop in replacement. So maybe that's getting us closer. But until we have something that's really, really simple and does one thing really well,. it's going to take a while.
