There are a lot of these examples in american history, a whole bunch of em, filling up whole books with varying degrees of unconventionality and hostility to the surrounding society. It would be a mistake to think that the north was in any way a friendly place for people with dark skin. Many blacks going back to the days of slavery found comfort in christianity. And others like malcolm x and the black moslems, they would become downright hostile toward that idea.
