The boba tea emoji had been submitted by Ying along with her other designs but it wasn't accepted despite the drink having huge cultural resonance. In Cantonese slang boba actually means big boobs so there's an extra information I found out in the research. The manager of a well-known Chinese restaurant in San Francisco said sales of dumplings tripled during National Dumpling Day. He was very happy he said you know it was pretty amazing to hear that these emojis are also contributing to the local business and hopefully the boba emoji after this comes out.
