If you take a step away from the North Pole, you're walking south. East and West are now drawn out as a circle with a diameter of two meters centred on the North Pole. This means that you can walk forward in a perfectly straight line and for one meter you will walk north - then without changing direction, you will just suddenly switch to walking south.
