Giovanni's room is one of the most tender, life affirming, barrier breaking novels out there. I think that james baldwin occupies a special space on this list for his commitment to character and experience. And i'm wondering if that's going to be part of the western canon going forward, is if we're going to look at individuals as bloom suggests when he centers this.
