The Importance of Sight Words in Reading

When you're an English speaker and learning to read, the words that are being used to teach you to read are usually very familiar. You can't assume those words are already meaningful to the learner. So what happens? You can teach someone to connect the phonology with the orthography to basically memorize it. But until you combine that to the semantics, you can't really do what's called orthographic mapping. That's how reading proficiency grows by growing your bank of sight words.
