The Tribune's Legislative Power in Roman Politics

The Tribune had initially served simply as a figure that could physically intercede on behalf of a plebeian who was being wronged by a patrician. Over the years, as the city's government expanded and became more complex, the plebeians were required to be given their say in the affairs of the city. By the second century, BC, despite exceptional moments of independence, Tribune's were as likely to be instruments of the Senate as champions of the people.
