The king knows from the get go that the communists aren't going to let him actually rule the country. The popularity of the Khmer Rouge's explodes now that they've got seen up as a figurehead. So he backs his former enemies, not because he's going to get to be in charge again, but because fuck the right wing throwing him out of power. It's just about spite. I love it.
