The Importance of Immortality

I don't know whether we're built for immortality psychically. I think we're very dependent on death. This whole business of being born and eventually dying, it gives our life a sense of structure. We may not completely understand it, but it is something. It's crucial to our experience of time. And maybe that's one of the things that I would fear running out of. In fact, there is one point in this essay where I posit it is entirely possible that immortality would drive a proportion of humanity insane. Given how many people are mentally ill already, I find that credible.
