As a professor i've done as a professor besides teaching my classes is to advise doctoral students and the doctoral students have to do the study or studies and then they have to write up the thesis. Over the years i got to be quite good thesis advisor because one of the things i could do was to help them decide how to go from doing experiment to doing a study to writing it up.
