The cosmic microwave background, or CMB, was discovered in the 1960s. It's been used to answer a lot of questions about how our universe formed and what holds it together now. The light is uniform but there are tiny variations that can be mapped on the sky. This information has helped us learn more about cosmologists' theory of the Big Bang.
