Grief is infinitely complex and unique. How you might want some one to respond to your grief in a different set of circumstances is not necessarily how some one else experiencing grief in their own way is want you to respond. Keep it so simple and saying, i'm so sorry, or acknowledging it with a bag of shopping is the most meaningful from my unique spector. Make it a gift, not an exchange. Have you ever considered adoption? Yes, i really have. I know very good friends who've been through it, and it's a really, really tough process. There's a whole layer of complexity there as well that needs to be acknowledged for people going through the adoption process.
