The US-China Relationship: A Brief History

The economic and trade communication channels were much wider open, the aperture was much wider and the relationships were much stronger. I traveled to China with the then chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Richard Myers, met with his counterpart. Those were always subject to the ups and downs of the political relationship. If we had sold weapons or authorized weapon sales to Taiwan, the Chinese would cancel those dialogues. They were not often sustained.
