In 1880, JP Morgan was the first home in New York City to have electric lights. By turn of century, if you were living in a middle class section of NYC or Chicago, you had electric lights. That's a fundamental transformation of the way your life works. Changes all sorts of things just to have electricity. The industrial system needed those people.
