The Story of Shayne O'Neill

Shayne O'Neill was fostered out to another powerful Ulster clan as a kid. He sought to extend the power of their o'Donnell's so that there should be but one king in Ulster for the future. The English tended to misinterpret Shayne's motives seeing him as simply refusing to accept the rights of the Earl. But he just can't keep a man like Shayne the proud down. In 1548 he defeated the O'Neill clan in battle ostensibly to reassert his father's control over a clan that was being undermined by those cursed McDonald's taking over in Antrim. His aims coincided with those of the English who had built a garrison form at Nuri in southeast Ulster
