The Importance of Listening
I'd really love to, to teach more and to teach creative writing. But it's been a real learning for me that not everyone wants your advice. I went through a phase of giving my friends advice that they did not ask for. And guess what? No one wants it. They just want you to listen. It took me a long time to work out that every single one was, oh, I'm just so afraid of feeling bad that I haven't felt anything at all in a long time. We're so frightened of feelings and pain and our own people's and other people's.
