The trade unions realised that none of the existing political parties really represented them. It was a long struggle, and the workers party had to win municipal elections,. Then eventually Lula stood to be as presidential candidate in 1989. What he was saying, electrified the country. But the military were against him, business was against him. He came second, but was dispirited.
