Catalonia and Spain in the Eighteenth Century
The eighteenth century in general is a period of consolidation and centralization all over much of europe. A lot of these local, regional domains that used to have various kinds of autonomy end up get sort of absorbed into centralized absolutist states. After catalona is absorbed into this new royal state, there distinct laws and their courts are abolished. And also, the language is repressed. Catelan is banned as a language. Of government and administration. And later it is banned in schooling and education,. So we see the beginning of this kind of french style campaign to homogenize the kingdom.
