What's Your First Name in English?
names like alfred or edward would still have had meaning to a speaker of old english. The name gets passed down, and the form of the name doesn't end up changing as much as the language changes. So for example, now, like alf is no longer quite the same word as elf. And then rat is not the word for counsel any more. But it's not that different from naming kids names that have a meaning in modern english, let's say, hunter or daisy.
