The Axis Deer Institute on Maui Nui
Maui Nui is home to more than 60,000 Axis deer. The animals have no predators and die of starvation every 10 or 15 years. A nonprofit called the Axis deer to tuckus was set up to help control their population. It's now at full capacity; it will process about a million pounds this year.
