Many, many wolves were lost in this conflict. The soldiers do manage to kill a lot of wolves, and they scatter the rest. Gradually the wolves were collected and rounded up, and eventually several hundred of them were killed on mass. And there is a really sad moment cited in war history from the memoirs of a nurse named natalia linka. She talks about meeting wolves who sound like defeated survivors.
