Dowd came back raving to Wexler about the way they made records in Memphis. In New York, there was a strict separation between the people in the control room and the musicians in the studio. Dowd as someone with more technical ability than anyone at Stax could make musical suggestions. He soon regularly commuting down to Memphis to be part of the production team.
