i was very idea oriented when i started my research. I would come up with an idium, and then i would just go until i make it work. This is contraproductive because we allready have lots of ideas for so all ideas are cheap. Even the existing ideas don't mean anything if you can't use them to solve a good problem. And most likely, unless it's somehow a genious idea, it will just get lost. If you hack something together your method may not be quite right but that doesn't stop you doing it. Both approaches are valid if you are really good at coming up with new ideas. There are people who come up with ten novel ideas a year
