What's the Purpose of Institutionalization?
In the early 1900s, state hospitals and asylums are the largest employers of psychiatrists. One person is responsible for an entire floor and they're responsible for caring for like hundreds of people within an eight hour period. The purpose of these institutions really is to sort of remove people who are unproductive from the family in order to free up the family to be workers. And so you have this precedent set that set that if you are to try and like reduce the burden of care that goes into place through both economies but also through devaluing the labor inside of it.
