I think in some ways, what you're saying is all to the tension between the short term and the long term. If i don't respond to a colleague's request or a manager's, you know, instructions to do something right away, it's irritating for the person at the other end of the line. So people will notice it if you don't show up. And so it is really a cultural bias in favor of the trivial, over protecting what actually is is most important.
