The hypothalamus is really the crux of this debate because currently the clinical criteria don't actually test for hypothalamic function. So someone who's determined brain dead by the current clinical criteria, yet these patients have persistent hypothalamic function and are able to just state pregnancies. And I don't know about you, but that raises serious concerns if we're actually dealing with dead individuals here.
