Fleeing war is not a valid reason to be granted asylum. People can only get refugee status when they're outside the united states. They'll have to hope for what's called humanitarian parole. That lets them live and work here legally for a year, provided they have a family member here. But it also makes them ineligible for refugee statu.
The war in Ukraine has created the greatest flux of refugees in Europe since the second world war.
