Is There a New Marriage Tie?
Foucault points out that by the second century of the common era, evidence gets passed down through history in the form of documents of husbands writing letters to their wives. But it must not have lasted very long, right? because then we get to the Middle Ages and Christianity codifies the treatment of women as property. There still is a love ideal there, but it's very much love as in service to God,. which we will talk about in a monogamy episode when we talk about courtly love. The romantic period at the end of the 18th century and really flowers in the 19th century.
