The Staggerly Songs - Lee Shelton and William Lyons
Both lee shelton and william billy lyons were well known people in the black community in saint louis in 18 95. The republican party, being that it had been the party of lincoln, was often favored by newly enfranchised black americans following the civil war. But by the 18 nineties, America's political parties were re-alining with both actively courting the increasingly important black vote. So for the saint louis black community, this wasn't just some random murder. This was a high profile case where people's sympathies were often split down party lines.
