Four Strange Facts About North Korea That You Didn't Know
The Korean Peninsula was occupied and then annexed by the Japanese. It was kept as a Japanese colony for the next 35 years until Japan was defeated in the Second World War. When Japan finally surrendered, the northern part of the Korean Peninsula wasoccupied by the Russians and the southern part was occupied by the Americans. Neither wanted to give up territory and influence in this very strategic point of East Asia so the peninsula was divided into two countries. North Korea was formed only in 1948 but both claimed that they had jurisdiction over the entire peninsula.
