The Korean Peninsula was occupied and then annexed by the Japanese. It was kept as a Japanese colony for the next 35 years until Japan was defeated in the Second World War. When Japan finally surrendered, the northern part of the Korean Peninsula wasoccupied by the Russians and the southern part was occupied by the Americans.
