Aquinas: A predicate can be referred to as subject in three ways. We attribute certain properties of things to those things themselves, to individual substances. Aquinas then continues by noting how one may attribute a property to the substance either as an intrinsic property or with reference to another thing. The first case, intrinsic property, is then divided into two - quality and quantity.
