The Principles of Philosophy
Descartes assumed that matter had only one intrinsic essential attribute, extension. This meant all other properties of matter must be explained in terms of that one property. The hypothesis about the different size bodies was merely a Deus Ex Machina,. which in itself made no further prediction and hence could not be tested.
