Is Consciousness Adaptable?

Many of the stuff that goes around in our minds occurs at a subconscious level and there are people who argue that consciousness is mostly at the phenomenal, but what do you think about it. There's one sense of consciousness which does seem to be really valuable and adaptive. And this is the idea that information that's accessible to all systems. If it was not if it's in the system but I couldn't get at it, none of that would be possible.
