I think that what we saw at the beginning when he was going to disappear and his whole plan was to give up the ring and everything I think that he was trying to get on the other side. He probably figured hey I'm gonna live this nice long life without it by moving and living with the elves which we didn't know he was doing but it was his plan. So ultimately that pull of addiction was pulling on it you know in that in the final moments and he did age when he was with the elves but I have a feeling he thought he would he did.
