The Ameba and the Body

Every time we have encountered a mind, it is always a phenomenon generated by a body. We have no examples of minds without on the other hand, we do have plenty of examples of bodies without minds. So where is descartes getting then, this idea of the self as essentially a conscious mind which is separate and distinct from anything physical? What does that sound like? A in thus spoke zarathustra. There is a passage called despisers of the body, and we find, quote, body am i and soul, so saith the child. And you can go from the ameba and you can scale up to more and more complex life forms for a long time
