The Expedition to the Bitter Roots
The expedition struggled through 22 grueling miles. Lewis and clark realized they would never make it in these conditions, so they turned tail and went back down the mountain. On returning to the nez purse, they hired several guides and waited for more snow to melt. And one week's more melt, the expedition managed to cross the bitter roots in just six days. They arrived at a creek they had visited on their journey west, near the present day lolo, montana. Ahead of them lay the great plains and america. But they were still more than 27 hundred miles from home.
