The Importance of Joy in Stoicism

The Stoics are careful to say that the goal of life isn't joy, but joy is kind of a side effect. So if you are wise and virtuous, you'll probably experience joy as a consequence of that. But if you try to get a shortcut to joy, that potentially can lead you in a round in a circle or lead you in the wrong direction. It's not healthy to try and pursue these emotions directly, but to try and pursued the underlying cognitive states which tend to lead to healthy emotions as a consequence.
