When cliff faces erode, new faces of the mudstone strata are exposed to oxygen in the atmosphere. Carbon based fuel and natural iron pyrite together undergo a chemical reaction which leads to heating. And this oxidation based heating leads to the release of flammable gases that are imbedded in the rock. So here you have the three magic ingredients, right? You have fuel escaping, you have its very hot, and you have oxygen near by. So they and these fires further heat and melt the strata of the rock.
