Positive Pressure Ventilation
Positive pressure ventilation resulted in about half the mortality rate of negative pressure ventilation. The polio epidemic during the 1950s really showed that like, hey, we should maybe not do that anymore and turn towards positive pressure ventilation. And it was actually because it was easier to put all of these patients needing ventilation in one area of the hospital that marked the beginnings of ICUs.
