The Game Loop in Strategy Games
The default state for games is Permadeath and it's only this when we've had computers that are able to give us a single player narrative driven game that we've even had the opportunity to start thinking about saving multiple copies of the character. Spelunky is another example where it's quite a tight platformer is its game loop and then it lays down these higher level roguelike concepts over the top essentially my argument is you could take any tight game loop and turn it into a roguelike first person shooter no one's done that yet because of technical challenges involved but we know this particular system works.
