Herodotus and the Ionianians
Erstagoras asked Cleomines if he could leave Sparta undefended for a three-month march to the Near East. The amount of time that this campaign would require is way too long, says Herodotus. Athens agreed to send 20 ships to aid the Ionianians in their revolt against Persian rule. Rhetrians also sent five ships because they have an Ionian connection and wanted to protect their commercial interests. This marked the beginning of trouble both for the Greeks and the Persians,. meaning it marked the beginnings of the Persian Wars.
