Milton's educational system is like most of his work based on an ideal, but that does not mean it is entirely out of reach. The program sounds extraordinary, perhaps, and indeed has little to do with modern systems. It includes physical exercise before lunch, music with and after the meal, plus two hours of writing and military activities,. swordsmanship or fencing before supper. Young men so prepared should be ready to govern, to fight and to farm.
