The Importance of Speed in Enzymes

An enzyme has to be fast enough to do the job in the situation that it finds itself. So for example, if you have a process in the body that results in the production of a toxin,. some people might be aware of things like free radicals. These are damaging to the cell. And what you have is a number of enzymes within the cell that are able to act incredibly fast. As fast as they can identify, come in contact with a substrate, they will turn it over into something that is relatively benign to the cell - and that's incredibly important. That has to be that fast in order to protect the cell.
