French Fries and Chips

The word french fries along with chips is a very common side order of fast foods. During the golf war when france were against george bush's foreign policy there was this huge outcry in america against french fries and they started to call them freedom fries remember it's true. The belgiums are known for french fries because it's the national dish of belgium but france not so much. Could be that maybe they mistook the belgians for french since they speak the same language and they thought oh the french eat them?
