Etherium isn't one canonical thing. There are many clients, and then there are many clients connecting with other clients. The interesting about how this is going to work is that things are going to look like they are broken no matter what. And it's going to freak out a lot of people who don't know that. But so long as that core makes it through, it's fine. We'll fix the remaining layers after the fact. It would also be great if it didn't break, but if it did break, etheoriem would still be fine.
