The Difference Between Personal Style and Tasteful Design

I feel like with interface design or really anything, you could see something that is not your personal style, but feels tastefully done. So for example, a friend of mine was working on some like redesigning old school kind of windows interface components like buttons and like super tactile kind of muted tones, kind of dull colors. Not my style, not something that I would, you know, pull for myself, but it was so tastefully done,. And he's an amazing designer. So it's not surprising that it was tastefully done, but I was kind of thinking about that as well.
