Karia's Grand Plan to Reduce Poverty in Rural India
Karia is a tech nonprofit on a mission to eradicate extreme poverty in rural India. It provides regional language recordings made by local workers to tech firms and they use them to train their artificial intelligence systems. Our goal is to bring dignified digital work to rural Indians. We pay our workers a minimum of $5 an hour, which is 20 times paying the minimum wage. Number two, we give our workers in principle ownership of their data. So, whenever they record their voice, they own that. And every single time that data is resolved, they get royalties on it. That makes sure that they stay out of poverty.
