The Decapitation of the Treasury Civil Service
Liz Truss was shut out of key meetings in the run up to the budget, critical treasury decisions. Philip Hammond himself didn't want Truss in the meetings because he suspected she leaked. Margaret Thatcher had ousted Douglas Woss as an obstructive Keynesian when she wanted to lower taxes and deregulate for growth. The decapitation of the Treasury Civil Service left the most powerful department in government headless. For eleven days that followed the death of the Queen, the government disappeared behind the shadow cast by the palace. Throughout her life, Her Majesty the Queen, my beloved mother, was the only one who had left.
